Discussion Questions for Titus, Chapter 2

  1. The word "sound" found in Titus 2:1-2 can also be translated as "healthy." How would you define healthy doctrine in your own words? How can one be healthy in faith, love, and steadfastness?
  2. Paul instructs older men to show self-control. How does one exhibit self-control? Which areas of life are the most important to demonstrate self-control?
  3. Paul instructs older women to instruct younger women in several areas but the two most controversial are women are to work from home and be submissive to husbands. Many believe that these beliefs are out of date. Does the Bible go out of date compared to contemporary times? What other areas do you believe the Bible has gone out of date? How would you instruct the contemporary woman concerning her role within the family?
  4. Paul instructs Titus to model the behaviors found in Chapter 2 so no fault would be found in him. Why is it important to model what you teach? If you are not modeling what you are teaching, should you be teaching it? Why or why not? What are examples of a person teaching what they are not modeling?
  5. Titus 2:9 reads, "Bondservants are to be submissive to their own masters in everything; they are to be well-pleasing, not argumentative." Do you think this verse instructs us about our behavior at work? Why or why not? What are the appropriate behaviors at a job or at school? What are some behaviors that should not be acceptable?
  6. Titus 2:11 Paul writes that the grace of God has appeared like it is a physical thing or being. What is the grace of God? If it isn't a physical being or thing, why would Paul say it appeared?
  7. Paul writes that believers are in training to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age. How long does this training last for a believer? What is the value of going through such training?
  8. Paul says in Titus 2:14 that Jesus gave himself to redeem us from all lawlessness. Webster's Dictionary defines "redeem" as buying back or freeing from what distresses or harms. How does Christ redeem the believer? Who does He buy us back from and what does He free us from that harms us?
  9. Christ purifies us for Himself to be zealous for good works according to Titus 2:14. How are we purified and what good works should we do once we are purified? How do our good works show that we belong to Christ?
  10. Titus 2:15 reads "Declare these things; exhort and rebuke with all authority. Let no one disregard you." What authority do we have to rebuke others? How can we do the things listed in the verse with love and humility?
