Discussion Questions for Revelation, Chapter 16

  1. The angels that pour out the judgment came out of the heavenly temple, wearing garments that resemble a priest's garments. What should this indicate to us? Why does God, a holy being, sanction such destruction in this chapter?
  2. Compare the first bowl with the sixth plague of Egypt. What are some similarities? What are some differences? Does God eventually take this plague away from the remaining beast-worshipers? Why or why not?
  3. The second and third bowls mirror the second and third trumpets from chapter 8. What is different this time? Are these the same events or different events? Why or why not?
  4. The people in Revelation are given so many chances to repent and serve the Lord, but even while they suffer tremendously, they continue to blaspheme the name of God. What might convince a person like this to turn to the Lord? Do you know anyone like this today? What can you do to bring the Gospel to them?
  5. Even in the midst of judgment, God seemingly still provides a way for the people to repent, glorify Him, and be saved (verses 9 and 11, CSB). If the Lord knows these people will not repent, why do you think He continually gives them more opportunities to repent?
  6. What is the role of repentance in salvation? Is repentance the same thing as salvation? Why or why not?
  7. The fifth bowl mirrors the fifth trumpet in Revelation 9. Are these the same events? Why or why not? How else does it mirror the ninth plague of Egypt?
  8. Here in chapter 16, God is using sores, fire, darkness, and much more to judge the people. How else does He judge people? How has He judged you?
  9. What is the role of demonic spirits in Revelation 16:13-16? How does this scene reflect the spiritual conflict between God's kingdom and evil throughout Scripture?
  10. What is the great city? What is the significance of it being split into three parts? What was the city's sin that led to this punishment?
