Discussion Questions for Psalms, Chapter 5

  1. In many of his psalms, David is not hesitant to come before God in a state of emotion. Do we act like David, or do we feel as if we need to get a hold of our emotions before we pray? Why might this be?
  2. In verse 2, David addresses the Father with two different names, "my King and my God". (ESV) What are some attributes of God as King? How might our view of God change if we viewed him as King of our lives?
  3. Often we do not like to think of God as capable of hate, but we learn in this psalm that he hates wickedness and evil. How might this serve as both a warning and an encouragement to believers?
  4. What does verse 7 say is the result of God's steadfast love towards us? How does this make you feel to know that God welcomes in believers in such a way?
  5. The steadfast love of God is "abundant" (ESV). Why is it important that his love be steadfast? Is our love for God steadfast in the same way? Why or why not?
  6. In verse 8, David prays to God for direction: "Make your way straight before me" (ESV). When we ask God to give us direction, do we normally wish for our way or his way? How would prioritizing his path for us change the way we pray?
  7. Read verses 9-10. Think of modern day models of this behavior. Often we disapprove of them because they have sinned against us, but the most grievous sin is that they have rebelled against God (v.10). Is our anger against these individuals righteous, on God's behalf, or selfish, on our behalf? If selfish, how might we avoid sinning in such a way?
  8. Those who "take refuge" in God have cause for rejoicing (ESV). When one thinks of a refuge, safety from danger or tribulation comes to mind. If joy can be found in these circumstances, how is this proof that joy and happiness are not the same?
  9. According to verse 11, what is one reason why God protects "those who love his name"? (ESV) Why do we most often pray for protection? Is this God-honoring? Why or why not?
  10. The Lord blesses the righteous (v.12). Does this mean that he leads the righteous to an easy, worry-free life? Why is this still cause for gratitude and rejoicing?
