Discussion Questions for Psalms, Chapter 149

1. What do you think it means to "sing to the LORD a new song" (v.1, ESV)? Does it always pertain to music? Why or why not?
2. According to verse 1, where and with whom should we sing praise to God? Are you faithful in doing so? Do you believe it is a necessary part of the Christian life? Why or why not?
3. When praising God, how often do you praise him as "Maker"? "King"? (ESV) If you do not, how might doing so impact your understanding of who God is, as well as how you worship him?
4. Would you consider your worship-style sober and serious or joyful and loud? Are either of these a wrong way to praise the Lord? Why or why not?
5. How does the Lord take "pleasure in his people" (ESV)? How does it make you feel to know that God "takes pleasure" in you? Does it make you more or less likely to delight in him? Why?
6. How is salvation spoken of in this psalm? Why do you think "the humble" are the greatest recipients of salvation? (ESV)
7. How does praise and worship fulfill our purpose as children of God? Do you feel as if you are fulfilling this purpose when you sing praises to the Lord? If not, what might be holding you back?
8. How does the psalmist correlate praise of God with victory against evil? Why is this significant to our lives even today?
9. What does it mean to be "godly"? Who has modeled "godly" behavior for your life in recent years? How have you served as an example of "godliness" for others to follow?
10. Why do you believe the psalmist implies that enacting vengeance and justice on a people can bring "honor" to the godly? Are there occasions when this is not true? Why do you think this is?
