Discussion Questions for Psalms, Chapter 11

  1. What is the importance that David starts this Psalm with "In the Lord I take refuge" (ESV)? In times of difficultly do you first turn to the Lord or do you try to figure it out beforehand? Give some examples in your life
  2. In v.3 when it says "if the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?" (ESV), this is referencing to the pillars of Israelite society. When things go awry in your life such that it feels like the "foundations are destroyed" what is your natural response? Is it to "flee like a bird" (ESV), or do you find yourself trying to white knuckle the situation? Give some examples in your own life.
  3. Is it hard for you to picture God on a throne in heaven right now? How does God being on a throne affect your view of Him?
  4. How does make you feel that "his eyes see" (ESV)? Are there things that you do that you are ashamed of that God can see?
  5. In v. 5 it says "The LORD tests the righteous" (ESV), Have you ever experienced a test form the Lord? What was it and what was the outcome? Did you respond positively or negatively? Overall, what did you learn from the test?
  6. What is the difference between a test and a temptation? Where does each one of them come from? What are the outcomes? Give some examples of both tests and temptations you have experienced.
  7. Is it harder for you trust the Lord in easy seasons or hard seasons? Why do you think that is?
  8. When you think of the word "refuge" what do you think of? Try to formulate a definition of Refuge as a group or individual.
  9. When v.7 says "For the LORD is righteous" what makes the Lord righteous? What makes a person righteous?
  10. In v.6 when it says "Let him rain coals on the wicked", what do you think of David's request to the Lord? Do you agree? Disagree? Why?
