Discussion Questions for Proverbs, Chapter 20

  1. Are alcoholic drinks prohibited by the Lord? Why or why not? With either answer, how can we honor the Lord through this?
  2. How do we balance work and the idea of trusting the Lord? How does this relate to verse 4?
  3. Read verse 4. Many people may look trustworthy, but how can you know if a person is truly trustworthy? Who are the people that are trustworthy in your life?
  4. Answer the question found in verse 9. What makes you clean from your sin before God? How can you be sure?
  5. Read Exodus chapters 3 and 4, but with special focus on 4:11. Now read Psalm 139. What do you feel after dwelling on God's hand in your own creation? How can you show your trust for the One who made you?
  6. Have you ever cheated your way to success? When was that? How does verse 17 describe your feelings after the fact?
  7. Why do you think verses 10 and 23 both cover similar subjects? How can you ensure that you are being fair in your business?
  8. Think about the story of Job. At the end, does he get to learn why God allowed him to bear all his misery? Why do you think we strive to know all the details of God's plan?
  9. Reflect on the characteristics of light. How does verse 27's usage of the word "lamp" (CSB) create a powerful image of the Lord's perception? What other passages can you think of that use light as a theme?
  10. Why do you think gray hair is the splendor of old men? Why did ancient people revere and trust their elders much more than modern people? How can you intentionally learn from the older people in your life?
