Discussion Questions for Proverbs, Chapter 16

  1. What does verse 1 mean? If God peers into our hearts (Proverbs 15:11), why does this verse describe our thoughts as our own? Why do our words belong to the Lord?
  2. Verse 2 makes the point that people often justify themselves, even when they do something wrong. The Lord knows the real reason a person sins though, so what defense can we have? How can we truly be justified if God knows even the motives of the things we do?
  3. Proverbs 16:3 talks about committing our activities to the Lord. Pay special attention to the words "activities" and "plans" (CSB). How does involving Him in our activities lead to His guidance in our plans? In what ways can you involve the Lord in your activities throughout the day?
  4. Does God create people with the sole purpose of condemning them to hell? How does verse 4 help you answer this question? What other passages help you answer this question?
  5. How has the Lord guided your steps? How can you trust that he will continue to do this in the future?
  6. Do you think that God actively punishes pride and arrogance? Or do you think that they just generally lead to destruction? Why do you think this? If you can, use other Scriptures to make your case.
  7. Verses 27-30 give descriptions of various kinds of wicked people. Don't name any names, but does this describe anyone you know? How can you either lead them to repentance or distance yourself from their sin?
  8. Why is gray hair a glorious crown? Think about previous proverbs that deal with people living long lives. What "older" people do you surround yourself with? How has this benefitted you?
  9. Oftentimes when we ask for patience, the Lord gives it to us by giving us opportunities to practice being patient. How has the Lord given you opportunities for patience recently? Were you successful? How can you prepare for the next time you'll need patience?
  10. What is the "lot"? How did ancient Israelites use this to help determine the will of the Lord? How do you determine the will of the Lord today?
