Discussion Questions for Philippians, Chapter 2
- Why is maintaining unity in the Body vital? What does the Church look like today? How can we seek out unity with our brothers and sisters in Christ?
- What are some ways that you can put verses 3-4 into action today? Why do you think Paul wants the readers to consider others more important than themselves? How does this mirror Christ's life?
- Even though Christ was equal to God, he did not exploit that power. If you were in Jesus' shoes, when might you have been tempted to use that power to serve yourself?
- How does Jesus' example of service outshine any kind of serving we can do in our lives? How can we attempt to mirror his willingness to serve?
- Verses 10-11 state that everyone will confess that Jesus is Lord. Many people have died without confessing this truth, so what does this mean? How does this encourage us to share the Gospel with those around us?
- What does it mean to "work out your own salvation" (verse 12, CSB)? How can we reconcile this with the fact that our salvation is based on faith and not works?
- How is God working in your life? How are you sure that it is Him? Where were you before the Lord started working in your heart?
- Read verses 15-16. How do we ensure that we are shining the light of Christ? Why is Scripture such an important aspect of this?
- Reflect on the examples of Timothy and Epaphroditus in verses 19–30. What qualities do they exhibit that we can mirror in our service to God and others?
- Epaphroditus came close to death for the sake of Christ. Have you ever been in danger for the sake of Christ? How do we know where to draw the line between being obedient to the will of the Holy Spirit and foolishly putting yourself in danger?
