Discussion Questions for Numbers, Chapter 21

  1. When the Canaanite king of Arad captured some Israelites, Israel vowed to destroy their cities if the Lord would help them (cf. verses 1-2). Do you believe this is a justified prayer? Why or why not?
  2. The word "Hormah" (verse 3, CSB) means "destruction." Why was this an appropriate name for the place? What kind of message would this send to Israel's neighbors?
  3. Israel "became impatient because of the journey" (verse 4, CSB). Why is patience such a difficult characteristic to develop?
  4. In verse 5, Israel complained again because of their circumstances. What was the Lord's response in the following verse? Do you believe the Lord brings hardships into our lives today? Why or why not?
  5. Only after many Israelites died did they admit their sin (cf. verse 7). Why would they ask Moses to intercede for them instead of praying themselves? What people in your life do you ask to pray on your behalf?
  6. Why do you believe the Lord instructed Moses to make a snake image on a pole and have people look at it for healing (cf. verse 9)? How would this strengthen their faith in the Lord?
  7. When Israel made their way to Beer, the Lord told Moses, "Gather the people so I may give them water" (verse 16, CSB). In what ways does the Lord provide you with times of refreshment?
  8. Was the offer that the Israelites made to the Amorites in verses 21-22 reasonable? How do you react when people reject your reasonable offers?
  9. What happened to King Sihon when he fought against the Lord's people? What does it mean to you that the Lord is on your side?
  10. In verse 34, the Lord said to Moses, "Do not fear him, for I have handed him over to you along with his whole army and his land" (CSB). What promises has the Lord already decided that give you confidence?
