Discussion Questions for Numbers, Chapter 17

  1. According to verses 1-5, the Lord instructed Moses to select a staff from each tribe so He could choose one man from among them. Why is it God's prerogative to choose His leaders?
  2. Why would the Lord have each staff placed in front of the tent of meeting (cf. verse 4)? What is special about a place where the Lord meets with us?
  3. What was the purpose of this process (cf. verse 5)? How have you seen God work for the benefit of His people?
  4. Why is complaining such a destructive habit? In what ways have you seen complaining make a situation worse?
  5. In verses 6-7, Moses obeys the Lord's commands. Do you believe obedience is easy or difficult? Why?
  6. How could Aaron's staff—and only Aaron's staff—have sprouted overnight? What is something that has happened to you that could only have been God's doing?
