  1. In verse 5, how could someone have peace amid destruction? Do you usually find peace in crises? Why or why not?
  2. Do you find it troubling that verse 3 describes God giving up Israel? How might you explain this verse to a nonbeliever?
  3. How does verse 9 give hope and how could we apply this to having hope today?
  4. Verse 3 says the judgement and suffering will be temporary. What situations in your life could this perspective give comfort in?
  5. Verses 5-6 use shepherding/leadership imagery for punishment. What does this teach us about part of the role of leadership and is this similar to or different from leadership today?
