Discussion Questions for Mark, Chapter 6

  1. Rather than receive Jesus' words with a humble heart, the people in Nazareth were offended by them. What is a passage of Scripture that convicts you? Why does it convict you? How do you remember to receive that passage with a humble heart?
  2. Why do you think Jesus was unable to do many miracles in his hometown? Is belief a prerequisite for miracles? Why or why not?
  3. What does it mean to "shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them" (verse 11, CSB)? Is this a practice that we should follow with our friends and family? Why or why not?
  4. Where do we see people "dust their feet" against others in Scripture? Have you ever had to do this? Why?
  5. How is John the Baptist similar to Elijah? Why is this an important connection to make?
  6. When was a time in your life where you felt backed into a corner due to your own poor decisions? Did you dive further into sin, or turn down a righteous path? What could you have done to go down a better path?
  7. After promising anything she wanted, Herodias asks for John the Baptist's head. What could King Herod have done to make this situation right, now that he was bound to keep his promise? What should he have done to prevent being in this situation?
  8. Sin leads to deeper sin. How is this evident in this chapter? How is that evident in your own life?
  9. Read Psalm 23. What connections can you make between it and Mark 6:30-44? How has Jesus provided for your needs? How can you place more trust in Him today?
  10. The end of this chapter is a sharp contrast from the beginning. What differences do you spot in verses 53-56 and verses 1-6? Who were these people? Why do you think they were more willing to accept Jesus than Nazareth? Why are some people today more willing to accept Jesus than others?
