Discussion Questions for Mark, Chapter 3

  1. Why would healing a person be considered breaking the Sabbath to the Pharisees? Why do you think the Pharisees thought this was wrong but Jesus thought it was right? Why do you think Jesus didn't wait a day to not offend them?
  2. Verse 5 states that Jesus was "looking around at them with anger" (CSB). Was this anger wrong? Why or why not?
  3. The unclean spirits that saw Jesus obviously knew him, but why didn't Jesus want them to proclaim his name? Why do you think they were compelled to acknowledge him?
  4. Why was Simon renamed? What is the significance of his new name? How have different interpretations of his new name caused division in the Church over the centuries?
  5. Why do you think Jesus only picked 12 Apostles? Why would Jesus knowingly select an Apostle who would eventually betray him? How have you betrayed him?
  6. Jesus' actions made his own family think that he was out of his mind. Would your family say the same about your faith? Why? What would it take for your family to try to intervene in your faith?
  7. Why would Jesus make himself the "bad guy" in verse 27? What sins has Jesus bound up in your life?
  8. What is the unforgivable sin? What does it mean to blaspheme against the Holy Spirit?
  9. By accusing Jesus of blaspheming, they themselves had blasphemed. Do you think Jesus would have forgiven them? Why or why not?
  10. Would Jesus identify you as part of his family? How do you know?
