Discussion Questions for Leviticus, Chapter 26

  1. How will the Sabbath help protect the Israelites from idolatry? What will happen if they keep the Sabbath, and what will happen if they do not?
  2. Define what an idol is. What modern-day idols do you see around you today? How can Leviticus 26 help us understand how to respond to idolatry? How can we respond in light of the cross?
  3. "You shall not make idols for yourselves or erect an image or pillar, and you shall not set up a figured stone in your land to bow down to it, for I am the LORD your God." (Leviticus 26:1, ESV) Why are various images named here? What is the difference between an idol, a pillar, or a carved stone? How would knowing this expand your understanding of the passage?
  4. "Five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall chase ten thousand, and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword." (Leviticus 26:8, ESV) Why does God compare the ratios?
  5. I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that you should not be their slaves. And I have broken the bars of your yoke and made you walk erect." (Leviticus 26:13, ESV) What does it mean that He broke the bars of their yoke? What was their yoke? How did He break it?
  6. And if, in spite of this, you will not listen to me, then I will discipline you again sevenfold for your sins." (Leviticus 26:18, ESV) What is God communicating? What opportunity is He trying to give through His correction? Why sevenfold?
  7. What different blessings do you see in this passage? What curses? Do they parallel one another? What themes of impact do they share?
  8. What similar themes of actions and punishment do you see from and upon the Israelites that were also from and upon the Egyptians? Why is this so?
  9. How does God treat His commands and promises? Do we believe His voice and word the first time we hear or read them? How would full dependence and obedience to God's voice and word impact your life today?
  10. Where do you see God's heart in this chapter? Is it seen clearly? If so, how? Is it hard to see? If so, what would help you to see God's love and teaching in this passage?
