Discussion Questions for Joshua, Chapter 7

  1. What are the "devoted things" in verse 1 (also see chapter 6, v. 18)? Why did it cause the Lord's anger to burn against Israel?
  2. Israel is held responsible for the sin Achan committed (v.8). What does this tell us about our responsibility to others in the church? What does it tell us about God's justice?
  3. In verse 7, Joshua questions why God led them across the Jordan to be destroyed. What other Israelite leader did the same thing? What does that tell you about human nature? Can you relate? If so, how?
  4. How can Achan's death be a warning to Christians about the seriousness of disobedience?
  5. Jesus discusses storing up worldly wealth in Matthew 6. Using Joshua 7 and Matthew 6, what can we understand about the dangers of earthly wealth?
  6. How is God honored in our confession of sin? (v.19)
  7. What does this passage teach us about how our sin affects others?
  8. We see in chapter 7 that there is punishment for sin. How did Jesus satisfy our debt? How does this affect the way you see your sin in light of it?

  10. In verse 12, God says He will no longer be with the Israelites unless they destroy whatever was devoted to destruction. Does this mean God will leave us after we've sinned? Why or why not?
