Discussion Questions for Job, Chapter 4

  1. In chapter 4, Job’s friends begin to respond to him about his circumstances and point to what they view as the cause of his plight. Eliphaz begins the series of speeches in chapters 4–5. As you read through chapter 4, what features of the dialogue stand out to you? Are there any key words or verses that can help guide your understanding of the chapter? What are some key lessons that apply to your life today?
  2. Who was Eliphaz? What can you learn about him? Who in your life can you point to that might be this type of friend or counselor or advisor? How have they helped you in times of trial?
  3. Verses 3–4 seem to be giving some words of encouragement in recognition of Job’s character. What are some of Job’s strengths that Eliphaz points out? What about you? How quickly are you able to recognize and affirm the gifts of those around you?
  4. There is a connection between verses 2 and 5 (ESV). What word is repeated in these verses? What point is Eliphaz making about Job? Do you think his assessment about Job is right? Why or why not?
  5. What assertion does Eliphaz make about Job in verse 6? Are the things that he points out strengths or weaknesses? Explain your answer. What strengths or weakness do you relate to the most?
  6. In verses 7-11, Eliphaz pronounces his initial verdict about what he believes is the issue based on his own experiences. What questions does he ask in verse 7? What explanations does he give in verses 8-9? What do you think you would say to Job if you were a part of the conversation?
  7. In verses 12-16, Eliphaz recalls some form of vision that he had that led him to offer his thoughts to Job. What does he say in these verses? Is it possible for God to communicate through dreams? Are dreams a common way for God to communicate to people? What makes you say this? Can you think of a modern-day example of God communicating through dreams?
  8. In verses 17-21, Eliphaz shares the message that he claims to have heard from a voice in his vision. In verse 17 specifically, he asks two questions. What questions does he ask? Is there any truth to what he is asking? Explain.
  9. Eliphaz makes a comparison/contrast between angels and people in verses 18–21. What is the argument he is making? How are his words helpful or hurtful to Job?
  10. How does this chapter apply to our lives today? What does Eliphaz say to Job that can guide us as we seek to live our lives “before God” (v. 17, ESV)?
