Discussion Questions for Job, Chapter 25

  1. As Bildad begins, why would he combine the concepts of “dominion” and “fear”? (ESV) How might these two things relate to God's justice?
  2. Explaining a part of the concepts of “dominion” and “fear”, Bildad points to the innumerable soldiers in God’s armies. What are some ways this speaks to God’s ability to attain and maintain peace?
  3. In verse 3, How does Bildad imply that everyone is currently and daily depending on God? Why would Job, or anyone following God, need this reminder?
  4. Continuing with the theme of mankind, how does Bildad’s questions about being “in the right before God” and “being pure” (ESV, verse 4) rightly speak of man’s condition? More importantly, how does it speak to the heights of God’s goodness?
  5. Reflecting on how Bildad weaponizes God’s holiness against Job, how does he also bring judgment on himself? Does this undermine his point of Job’s guilt or is he claiming that every person’s deserved suffering?
  6. How is the Good News of Jesus helped by Bildad’s focus in this passage? How does it help you clarify what makes the Good News so good?
  7. Consider the significance of the moon and stars in verse 5. How do they compare to God’s holiness? Think of the most amazing sight in Creation. How does the feeling of beauty and transcendence help in understanding and explaining God’s holiness?
  8. In verse 6, how do you most instinctively react to the descriptions of “Man” and “the son of man”? Is this an accurate contrast in God’s eyes, considering the value of his Creation?
  9. Throughout the four Gospels, Jesus refers to himself as “the Son of man”, similar to this passage in verse 6. Read Mark 10:45, as one example. How does Jesus use this title to explain his actions? How might that help Christians better display humility in light of God’s holiness?
  10. What characteristics of God are missing in this short argument from Bildad? How would you respond with a call for a fuller picture of God?
