Discussion Questions for Job, Chapter 2

  1. What contrasts do you see between God and Satan in this chapter? How do you think God is proven greater than Satan?
  2. In chapter 1, Job loses everything he holds dear. Despite this great sorrow, has this in any way changed God's view of Job? Why or why not?
  3. Despite all Job has faced thus far, "he still holds fast his integrity" (v. 3, ESV). Can you think of a person in your life that has "held fast" to integrity and honored God in the midst of trials? Give specific examples. How have they inspired and encouraged you to do the same?
  4. When God boasts of Job's faithfulness, how does Satan respond? Do you believe it is generally true that a man's life and health is the most important thing to him in the world? Why or why not?
  5. In verse 6, God gives Job into Satan's hand to do as he wished. Do you think this means God was any less in control of Job's life as before? If not, how can this bring hope to believers today?
  6. How did the wife of Job respond to this new trial? What character from this chapter was she imitating? Have you ever been tempted to respond to another person's suffering in a similar fashion? What would a more loving response to Job's sorrow have been?
  7. How did Job respond to his wife's criticism? What do you think it means to receive both "good" and "evil" from God. Does this in any way take away from his goodness? Why or why not?
  8. At this point, how might Job have felt? How is it possible that he still "did not sin with his lips" (v.10, ESV)? Are believers ever given an excuse to sin? Why or why not?
  9. How did Job's friends display love towards him? What ways might we do the same for friends who are suffering, too?
  10. There is no doubt that Job has suffered greatly by this point. What comfort is there for him still? In light of the hope that he has in God, should he be sorrowful at all? Why or why not?
