  1. How does Job describe life in this passage? Do you think Job's description of life is accurate? Why or why not?
  2. Job says that God has determined our days, numbered our months, and set our limits (v. 5). Is this encouraging or discouraging in times of suffering? Why?
  3. Three times Job contemplates what happens after death. What is the significance of this? Why do you think Job is thinking so much about death?
  4. What hope does Job have after death? (See vs. 14–17.) Do you think Job's hope is misplaced? Why or why not?
  5. Read John 11:25–26. How does the promise of eternal life in Christ affect the way you see your suffering?
  6. Job says that God "destroys the hope of man" and "prevails forever against him" (Job 14:20–21 ESV). Is this consistent with what we know of God from Scripture? How can our suffering cause us to question God's character?
