Discussion Questions for Isaiah, Chapter 40

  1. Chapter 40 begins a new section with a significant theme change. In what tone does God speak to his exiled people? What promises does he make at this juncture?
  2. What will all flesh see? Who will be comforted? How will God make a way? Where is the evidence that these events will take place?
  3. Who is the "voice crying in the wilderness?" (ESV) What was his role in the scope of Jesus' ministry? What do the gospels tell us about this forerunner and his attitude?
  4. God has clearly established his might and strength over the Assyrians and even disobedient Israel. How is his future coming going to be good news for Israel? How will he treat his flock? What does this tell you about our God?
  5. God mocks the idol makers and those who worship false gods. What is pathetic about these objects? How does God stand in contrast to false gods?
  6. Israel is tired and weary from her sin and exile. She feels forgotten in the distant lands. What does God plan to do for his weary people? How are the concepts of peace and the land of Israel connected in the Jewish mind?
  7. List the attributes of God in this passage. Have you experienced hardships in your life that revealed different aspects of God's character to you? Which aspects?
  8. God will address a lot of problems for Israel. What is the most important and overall necessity? Who will atone for these sins? What do you think this alleviation would do for these weary people?
  9. God is just and merciful to Israel. He cannot overlook sin but he is willing to forgive and heal. How does the cross of Jesus provide both of the necessities? Do you struggle with guilt over past mistakes? How does the story of the people of Israel encourage you?
  10. God revealed himself to the world in the person of Jesus Christ. How does it make you feel knowing that the powerful God of all has come near? What gift of his presence do we have today? What are daily rhythms we can cultivate to abide in Christ and enjoy this close fellowship?
