  1. Isaiah begins this portion by chastising the foolishness of trusting in untrustworthy rulers. In what ways does God prove himself to be a trustworthy choice as king? How can we spot the difference between paying lip service to God and trusting his lordship?
  2. Instead of treasuring God, the Israelites desired to be like other nations and attain their cultural sensibilities. In their idolatry, they decimated their own culture. What signs of cultural breakdown accompanied their disobedience? How do we see societal decay in our own age?
  3. Where does God compare the wicked to fuel sources and himself as a fire? Why does he threaten such terrifying judgment? How can a burning furnace produce beautiful things? Can you think of other passages that speak to faith in terms of fire or purification?
