Discussion Questions for Genesis, Chapter 35

  1. God calls Jacob to move his family to Bethel, but first they must make some significant life adjustments. What do they do with the idols? How do we explain God's kindness to Jacob despite the fact that his family worshiped idols? What adjustments have you made in your life in order to follow God?
  2. Like us, Jacob experienced many fears and stressful situations. What did God reveal in the past to Jacob at Bethel? What does the name Bethel mean? How can you use Jacob's view of God to counsel someone going through a stressful situation? Why doesn't God remove those situations entirely from us?
  3. After Jacob obeys God, the Lord appears to him again and confirms his covenant. How does it make you feel to know that God continually appears to, loves, and maintains his promises to his people? What are the elements of this promise? Do we see some fulfillment to this promise around us today? Where?
  4. God refers to himself with a specific name: El Shaddai. El Shaddai means "God Almighty." Why is that significant in this context? God renames Jacob to Israel. Do you recall what that means? (see Genesis 32). El Shaddai and Israel give two complementary dimensions to God's character. How would you describe God's relationship to his people?
  5. One might think that Jacob's obedience to God would bring an easier path in life. What significant hardships and losses did Jacob endure after Bethel? Do you think this was fair to him? How does the reality of God's power and personal care comfort you in your times of trial?
  6. A significant reason that many self-proclaimed Christians are not enjoying God's blessings are because of idols. What are some contemporary idols you struggle with? What has following Jesus cost you?
  7. Family betrayal and hurt can cut the deepest. What lasting ramifications would come because of Reuben's sin? Do you see some similarities between his bold immorality and his uncle Esau? After all this, God is still not done using Reuben. How does Reuben's life make a difference in the future?
  8. At 180 years of age, Isaac passes away. When he dies, who are the witnesses of God's blessings? How did God keep his promise to Abraham and Isaac at this point? How does Isaac's passing bring his family together? What can we learn about life's seasons and opportunities from this?
  9. Have you ever considered the enduring legacy of your life? How are you investing your life to multiply disciples and blessings after you pass from this world? What testimony are you spreading for the Lord? How can you sow peace into some soured relationships?
  10. If you have children, how are you passing the truth of God's promises on to your children? If you do not have kids, how could you invest in the next generation? What gifts and abilities do you have? What do you think are the biggest questions about God the next generation is asking?
