Discussion Questions for Genesis, Chapter 14

  1. Genesis 14 opens with warring factions fighting near the land that Lot had chosen. Lot is taken captive and Abram goes and rescues him from the warring countries opposing Sodom and Gomorrah. How has Abram amassed such wealth that he is able to defeat kingdoms? Why hasn't any country chosen to fight Abram or reduce Abram's forces and wealth before his estate became so large?
  2. In Genesis 14:18-20, Melchizedek, first known priest of God Most High, comes and blesses Abram after Abram returns victorious. What is the significance of this blessing? Why would Abram even desire this blessing after he has all of this wealth? How does this event reflect the importance of worshipping God?
  3. Abram gives a tenth of all of the spoil from the victory to Melchizedek. This is another early example of tithing in scripture. How significant should tithing be in a believer's life?
  4. Abram risks wealth and life to go rescue Lot even as Lot is grown and with his own wealth. How does this portray the importance of family in the culture? How does family support you in your decisions and life?
