Discussion Questions for Ezekiel, Chapter 7

  1. Why does God tell Ezekiel to speak to the "land (ESV)?" Do you think there is a connection to 6:1-7 and the message to the mountains? Why or why not? Why might this be important?
  2. What does the word "abominations (ESV)" mean? What kind of things fall into the category of abomination? What kind of things might fit that category in the church?
  3. The word "end" is prominent in 7:1-9. What does this refer to? Was this a message of hope or judgment? How do you know?
  4. The people were experiencing God's judgment, but there would be more judgment to come? Why do you think God brought more judgment? What evidence from the text supports your answer?
  5. Ezekiel 7:4 and 7:9 say that the "abominations are in your midst (ESV)." Can true repentance happen if sin remains? Why or why not? What does true repentance look like?
  6. Ezekiel 7:4, 9, and 27 remind us that God's judgment will result in the people knowing that he is Lord. Part of that revelation is that he is the Lord "who strikes (ESV)." What does this mean? Do you think this refers to mental or experiential knowledge? Why would the people need to experience God in this way?
  7. What role do you think greed played in the downfall of Israel? How do you know from the text? How do you put your trust in wealth today?
  8. How do verses 19-22 illustrate the futility of trusting in wealth? Can you think of a time when you've put your trust in something futile? How did you realize it was futile? What was your response?
  9. In addition to greed, what other sins are mentioned as a cause for their punishment in 7:23-27? What are some ways that we can see pride in our own lives? How do we find help for pride?
  10. Read 7:26-27. What kind of help will the spiritual leaders give? How might this be a form of judgment?
