Discussion Questions for Ezekiel, Chapter 6

  1. In Ezekiel 6:1-7, Ezekiel is told to address the mountains. What is it about the mountains that make them an appropriate audience for the prophecy? Give some examples of physical locations that represent evil in our culture?
  2. What were the "high places (ESV)?" What area, objects, or things might serve as high places in your life?
  3. Ezekiel is commanded to set his face. What does this expression mean? What are some areas in which we need to have a determined focus?
  4. What might be the problem of the multiple altars mentioned in 6:4? How would this relate to God's plan for the temple?
  5. Give some examples of ways in which we make religious things an idol. What might be some competing altars that we have in our own lives? Why do you think religious acts can become idolatrous?
  6. What does the destruction and death surrounding the religious sites imply about the effectiveness of these places? How do we know whether or not we have placed our trust in the right thing?
  7. According to 6:8-10, what is the goal of leaving a remnant? What does the phrase "you shall know that I am the Lord (ESV)" mean? What would it look like for the church today?
  8. How can God say that he is "broken (ESV)" over their unfaithfulness? What kind of emotion does this convey? How does change the way you think about your relationship with God?
  9. In 6:9, it says that the people "will be loathsome in their own sight for the evils they have committed (ESV)." What do you think this phrase is referring to? How does this phrase fit into the concept of repentance? How do we know when repentance has happened?
  10. How might the intense communication methods of clapping hands and stomping feet be received in the church? In what kind of situations would it be appropriate? What other nonverbal cues might be effective in grabbing someone's attention?
