Discussion Questions for Ezekiel, Chapter 2

  1. What title does God use to address Ezekiel in 2:1? What is the significance of this title for Ezekiel? Why does Christ use it for himself in the Gospels?
  2. How does Ezekiel's calling compare or contrast to that of Isaiah (6) and Jeremiah (1)? What might be the reason for the length and vivid imagery used in Ezekiel's calling?
  3. God tells Ezekiel to stand on his feet and the Spirit is seen as standing him on his feet. How might these two similar phrases help us understand the divine and human role in ministry?
  4. Read 2:3 and 2:5. What do we learn about the results of a ministry calling? How do we measure ministry success? How does God measure it?
  5. What kind of response does God prepare Ezekiel for? Have you ever had to deal with an audience or relationship that did not want to listen to you? How did your respond? How should we respond? How is Ezekiel encouraged in light of this message from God? How can this encourage us?
  6. In 2:4, Ezekiel is told to tell the people "thus says the Lord (ESV)." What does this tell us about the mission of a prophet? How might this relate to the ministry of a pastor? Can you think of examples of what this might look like?
  7. Based on 2:8, do you think that Ezekiel's message would be easy? What might be some examples of messages that would be difficult for a pastor to give? How have you received a difficult message?
  8. In 2:8, rebellion for Ezekiel is a failure to deliver God's word to the people. How might this relate the practice of accountability in the church? How do we keep one another accountable? What are some mistakes we might make in the process of accountability?
  9. Ezekiel's obedience is immediately tested. Why would God give him a test so quickly? Can you think of examples of when God has tested your obedience? What were your thoughts at the time? What did you learn throughout the process of the test?
  10. Ezekiel is told "eat what I give you (ESV)." What does that refer to? Today, we have the full counsel of Scripture to eat. What might it look like to "eat" God's word today? Do you think people are tempted to accept only bits and pieces of God's word? Why? What is the danger of this?
