Discussion Questions for Exodus, Chapter 15

  1. Why would Israel respond with a song in this chapter? What does this teach us about the importance of songs elsewhere in the Bible?
  2. Between chapters 14 and 15, some verses say the waters fell over Egypt, and others say that Egypt fell into the water. Find some of these verses and describe whether or not these are contradictory and why the author would speak about the event from different perspectives.
  3. What is the effect of repeating the events of chapter 14 with poetry in chapter 15? How does is deepen our understanding of the Exodus story?
  4. Verses 13-17 describe events that are in the future. Why do you think Israel is tacking about them here, and what does it teach us about the relationship between the past, and faith for the future?
  5. Based on verses 13 and 17, what is the goal of the Exodus? What do we learn about God's desire for friendship and communion with his people?
  6. Why would God test the people in verse 25? Does God test people today? Have you experienced something similar that seemed like a test?
