Discussion Questions for Exodus, Chapter 12

  1. Verses 1-2 describe a change in Israel's calendar. Why is this change made and what does it show us about the importance of these events in Israel's history going forward? Does this relate to the way we count years today?
  2. Why would God include the instruction in verse 4? How does this speak to us and what our priorities should be today?
  3. Why in verse 5 would the appearance of the lamb be important? Can you think of any symbolism behind this or other Biblical passages that use similar language?
  4. Verse 3 implies that religion was a family event in Israel. Is this similar or different from our context today? What could be some positives and negatives with this?
  5. We know that God could have known which houses belonged to Israel even without the sign on the doorpost. Why do you think God commanded this anyway?
  6. Why do you think the commands in verse 11 are given? What effect would this have had on those who celebrated this feast of remembrance in years to come?
  7. Do you think an Egyptian could have put blood on their doorpost and been saved? Do you think any of them tried this? Do you think this would have been acceptable and if so why?
  8. Why do you think the command in verse 15 is given and how does it relate to the feast meal generally? Can you think of other passages that pick up on the symbolism with leaven?
  9. Read Genesis 15:13. How does this help us understand why the author includes verses 40-41 of Exodus 12? What does this teach us about God's faithfulness?
  10. Verse 49 describes equality between Israel and foreigners. How does this help us correct the misunderstanding that God is only focused on Israel? What relevance does this verse have for us today?
