Discussion Questions for Ephesians, Chapter 4

  1. What is the "calling that you have received" (verse 1, CSB)? What does it look like walk worthy of that calling?
  2. Verse 2 emphasizes the importance of humility, gentleness, patience, and love in maintaining unity. How do these qualities contribute to unity within the body of Christ? What characteristics contribute to disunity?
  3. Verse 7 mentions that each one of us has received grace according to the measure of Christ's gift. How big was Christ's gift? How much grace have you received? How does this understanding of grace motivate us to use our spiritual gifts for the benefit of the church?
  4. Paul talks about various roles within the church, such as apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers in verse 11. How do these roles complement each other in building up the body of Christ? Are all these roles active today? Why or why not?
  5. Christ is the head of the Church. How does this inform us on how our churches should be organized? Why is the organization of a church important to the Lord?
  6. What is Paul referring to when he says that Christ descended (verse 9, CSB)? Why is Christ's descension important?
  7. What does it look like to "walk as the Gentiles do" (verse 17, CSB)? What does it mean to have futile thoughts?
  8. How did you come to know Christ? What must believers do if they want to see others come to know Christ? When was the last time you did these things?
  9. Verse 26 advises us to not let the sun go down while we are still angry. Why is it important to address conflicts and reconcile quickly within the body of Christ? How does the devil use people's lack of a willingness to reconcile against the body of Christ?
  10. What does it mean to grieve the Holy Spirit? Can you lose your salvation through this? Why or why not?
