Discussion Questions for Deuteronomy, Chapter 8
- The Lord told the Israelites that they would take possession of the promised land if they followed God's commands (verse 1). Would the Israelites be faithful? Why or why not?
- Why do you think the Lord would tell them to follow all of His commands if they were unable to do so? Why give such an impossible task?
- How has the Lord humbled you in your walk with Him?
- The Israelites were given food, water, and protection on their journey to the Promised Land. How has God provided for you?
- The Israelites did not deserve all the good things that God would provide in verses 7-15. What good things has He provided in your life that you do not deserve?
- Have you ever found yourself complacent in your walk with Christ? What made you realize your complacency? How did you renew your relationship with Him?
- Verses 12-17 highlight that if someone becomes blessed to the point of self-sufficiency, they can forget that the Lord is the source of those good things. Would you consider yourself self-sufficient? How can you rely on the Lord more this week?
- How does this chapter help identify the fault of the rich young ruler (Mark 10:17–27, Matthew 19:16–22, Luke 18:18–23)? Is wealth a sin?
- In verses 19-20, God threatens to destroy the Israelites if they do not obey Him. Read Genesis 17:7-8. If this is a "permanent covenant" (CSB), how can the Lord say that He would destroy them? How can we reconcile these two passages?
- Eventually, the Israelites would forget the Lord's work and would glorify themselves and other gods. What could they have done to remember His works through every generation? What can you do to remember God's work in your life?
