Discussion Questions for Deuteronomy, Chapter 6
- Deuteronomy 6:2 states, “that you may fear the LORD your God, you and your son and your son’s son, by keeping all his statutes and his commandments, which I command you, all the days of your life, and that your days may be long.” (ESV) Why are obedience and welfare so interconnected? How can we understand the true heart of this connection?
- Deuteronomy 6:5: “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” (ESV) What daily rhythms help you walk in unity with this verse? What is the hardest part about this verse? What do you need the most encouragement in to obey it? How can you encourage others to do the same?
- Deuteronomy 6:7 states, “You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” (ESV) What are some ways that parents can teach the Lord’s statutes to their children? What are some things that your parents did to teach you about the Lord?
- Deuteronomy 6:8-9 states, “You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” What is the heart of this passage? Is this verse literal or metaphorical? What did the people do to abide by these words?
- Deuteronomy 6:10-12 states, “And when the LORD your God brings you into the land that He swore to your fathers… to give you—with great and good cities that you did not build, houses full of all good things that you did not fill, cisterns that you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant—and when you eat and are full… take care lest you forget the LORD…” (ESV). What point is being made in this passage? We can so easily forget to recognize that all good things come from the Lord. How can you keep from forgetting all that God has done for you? How can you recall His acts of provision and bring Him praise today?
- Why is there such an emphasis on teaching the next generation about the Lord? How can you carry God’s truth to the coming generation? Why is this so important?
- How can you support parents around you who have young children? How can you be a spiritual influence and role model in the lives of young children?
- Deuteronomy 6:16 states, “You shall not put the LORD your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah.” What does it mean to put God to the test? How did the people do this at Massah? How can we keep from doing this today?
- Deuteronomy 6:20-21 states, “When your son asks you in time to come, ‘What is the meaning of the testimonies and the statutes and the rules that the LORD our God has commanded you?’ then you shall say to your son, ‘We were Pharaoh’s slaves in Egypt. And the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.’” (ESV) How do you envision this? How does the way you teach a child impact the way they receive it and obey it as they grow?
- The Israelites had a story of deliverance to pass down to generations. How has the Lord delivered you? Have you ever shared your testimony with anyone? How can you share your story of deliverance? Ask someone older in your life how God has delivered them.
