Discussion Questions for Deuteronomy, Chapter 3

  1. Deuteronomy 3:11, “(For only Og the king of Bashan was left of the remnant of the Rephaim. Behold, his bed was a bed of iron. Is it not in Rabbah of the Ammonites? Nine cubits was its length, and four cubits its breadth, according to the common cubit.)”(ESV) Why do you think these details were noted? Does this tell us something about Og?
  2. What is significant about the repeated reference to the rephaim? We see that Bashan was of this remnant. Based off of Scripture, what do we know about the rephaim? What would defeating the remnant of the rephaim communicate to the world?
  3. Deuteronomy 3:18, “And I commanded you at that time, saying, ‘The LORD your God has given you this land to possess. All your men of valor shall cross over armed before your brothers, the people of Israel.” (ESV) What would it have meant at that time for a land to be given to them by God? Who were the men of valor? How does The Lord work through these men?
  4. What stands out about Joshua? Why is he made successor?
  5. What can be gleaned from Moses’s plea to see the land God promised to Israel? How do you reconcile with praising God even when things do not go your way?
  6. Who in your life has been a leader to you like Moses to the people of Israel? What aspects of their leadership would you like to implement in your own life?
  7. How does Moses support Joshua? How can this shape how we care for upcoming leaders in our lives?
  8. Deuteronomy 3:20, “until the LORD gives rest to your brothers, as to you, and they also occupy the land that the LORD your God gives them beyond the Jordan. Then each of you may return to his possession which I have given you.’” (ESV) What rest represent for God’s people circumstantially and spiritually? What is theological significance of God’s promise of rest to His people?
  9. How can we cling to God’s good and perfect will, even when things do not go how we desire? What can help us see the bigger picture?
  10. Deuteronomy 3:22, “You shall not fear them, for it is the LORD your God who fights for you.’” (ESV) How has The Lord fought for you? What has been your experience fear? How does God’s authority help you let go of that fear? How can you encourage one another in the midst of fear? Take time to each share a fear you are battling, and then go around and speak words of encouragement over those fears to build one another up.
