Discussion Questions for Deuteronomy, Chapter 18

  1. The Levites and Levitical priests had no portion of land to inherit. Since they were serving God, He provided for them through the sacrifices and gifts that the other Israelites would bring. How can you be a blessing to your pastor or church leaders this week?
  2. What does it mean when it says, "The Lord is his inheritance," in verse 2 (CSB)? How can we try to mimic the Levites' reliance on the Lord in our lives today?
  3. Have you known someone who wanted to go into the ministry? How did they know that the Lord was calling them to that?
  4. While the free food was good, the true blessing for the Levites was serving the Lord on a day-to-day basis. What kind of similar blessings has God given you in your life? How can you use these blessings to serve the Lord?
  5. What modern examples of "detestable customs" (CSB) should we be avoiding? Why would God consider these modern examples detestable? If possible, make your case using Scripture.
  6. If a friend or coworker worships a false god, sees fortune-tellers, or practices sorcery, how can you show the love of Christ to that person?
  7. What is the difference between a fortune teller and a prophet? Why would God forbid one but not the other?
  8. When have you experienced the Holy Spirit moving in your heart to do something seemingly random for another person, but then it turned out to be a huge blessing for them? Have you ever denied the Holy Spirit in your heart? How can you prevent that in the future?
  9. What examples of false prophecy have you heard before? How did you know they were false?
  10. What role does prophecy have in the church today? Do you think that it is still a gift that God gives people, or has that time gone? Why or why not?
