  1. Why did God want the places of worship for other gods destroyed? Couldn't they have been used to worship the Lord?
  2. The Israelites were partially obedient and destroyed many altars, but not all of them. This was good, but God demanded complete obedience. How would this affect Israel's situation in the coming centuries? How have you partially obeyed God, but not completely?
  3. The city of Jerusalem is never mentioned in the Torah, but verses 5 and 11 allude to it. Why do you think the name "Jerusalem" is omitted from the first five books of the Bible?
  4. The phrase "everyone did whatever seemed right in his own eyes" appears many times in the book of Judges. How does this relate to here in verse 8?
  5. Can we worship God however we like? Why or why not?
  6. Sometimes blood is used to consecrate something to be holy, but then here in verses 16 and 23-25 it should be poured out on the ground. Why do you think these practices are so different? And why are humans forbidden from drinking the blood?
  7. Why does God forbid the drinking of animal blood, but we're invited to take part of the Lord's supper, which includes the blood of Christ (1 Corinthians 11:25)?
  8. The phrase "be careful" occurs six times in chapter 12. What is the significance of this?
  9. How does the description of Canaan in verse 29-30 mirror Egypt? How was God trying to warn the Israelites?
  10. How would have verse 32 helped the Pharisees in Jesus' time? How can it help us today?
