Discussion Questions for Deuteronomy, Chapter 1

  1. What is Moses doing in this chapter? Why is this happening? What is the significance of his timing?
  2. Deuteronomy 1:2 states, “It is eleven days’ journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea” (ESV). What is the significance of how long the journey was? How long did it take the Israelites?
  3. Deuteronomy 1:6 states, “The LORD our God said to us in Horeb, ‘You have stayed long enough at this mountain.’” (ESV) What kind of tone do you envision from the Lord here? What is He communicating to them with these words? What action is He wanting to take place?
  4. Deuteronomy 1:8: “See, I have set the land before you. Go in and take possession of the land that the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to them and to their offspring after them.” (ESV) This is a verse of assurance. How do you respond to the Lord when He brings us assurance through His Word and Holy Spirit? How do the Israelites respond to it?
  5. When the Israelites came to the land of the Amorites, how did they respond to God’s commands to them? What false belief were they clinging to? What did God want them to cling to instead? What do you personally glean from this verse?
  6. Why was Caleb an exception before the Lord? What can you learn from Caleb's heart? What are specific ways you can apply the same heart posture this week?
  7. Why does looking back impact the way you move forward? How have you seen this play out in your life?
