Discussion Questions for 2 Kings, Chapter 10

  1. Who was ultimately responsible for the deaths of Ahab and all his people? How does this correspond to your image of who God is?
  2. The prophet told Jehu to kill Ahab and his people; why do you think he also kill Ahaziah and his relatives, as well? What sin did Ahab and Ahaziah have in common? Why is it important that we guard who influences us? How can we be intentional about who we let influence us?
  3. Do you have a “Jehonadab”—someone you have complete confidence in—in your life? Do you have a heart that’s true to another’s, as Jehu’s heart was to Jehonadab? What is the value of having this sort of relationship? How has God used you in this type of relationship to shape another? How have these relationships impacted your life, and shaped who you are today?
  4. How was Jehu zealous for the Lord? What was his blind spot? (See V.v. 28-29) How can a person be so zealous for the Lord, yet have the sin of idolatry deeply embedded in their hearts? Are we any better than Jehu? What are some of the blind spots we typically see in our own culture’s expression of the Christian faith?
  5. Was Jehu right to lie in order to accomplish the work that God had appointed him to? Would you have done anything differently? If so, what would you have done differently? Is lying ever justifiable? If so, can you think of a situation in which you would be justified in lying?
  6. What is a solemn assembly? Can they be good things for us to participate in? What is the role of emotions in worship?
  7. Is there a correlation between obeying God and enjoying His reward? Are His rewards always temporal? In what non-temporal ways have you experienced God's reward when obedience came at a personal cost to you?
  8. What is the point in eradicating one false god while showing reverence to another? What is a way that people overcome one bad thing, only to replace it with another bad thing? What must we do to be truly set free?
  9. What does it mean to walk in the law of the Lord with all of one’s heart? How have you practiced or observed half-hearted obedience? What does the law of the Lord call us to? What does that look like?
  10. Why would God dismantle the land that He had promised to Abraham, and give it to other peoples? Was God disingenuous in His promise? Was God dishonest?
