  1. What characterized the teachings of those whom Paul calls "insincere liars" (ESV)? What are the dangers of their teachings? Where do such teachings originate?
  2. How does Paul show God's providence even as he points out the dangers of false teachings in vs. 1-4?
  3. What makes something holy (Greek: hagiazo, 'to sanctify, make holy, consecrate)? How do we gauge holiness in ourselves and others? What does Paul challenge us to see here? See vs. 4-5 and Col. 2:16-23.
  4. How is self-control exercised in the believer's life? What is the difference between godly self-control and worldly asceticism (avoidance of all forms of indulgence)? Where do you see these in your life?
  5. Paul calls Timothy to speak the truth and share good doctrine with his congregation. How are all members of the body of Christ called to this?
  6. What is the value of godliness? How is it connected to self-control? What does Paul urge Timothy to do concerning godliness? How can you train yourself in godliness this week?
  7. Paul warns Timothy not to become involved with "godless" myths (NIV). What false philosophies do Christians believe today? Why are false gospels appealing? Why is it crucial to identify and reject all false gospels?
  8. Paul speaks about the trustworthiness of what he says (vs. 9, also Ch. 3:1 and 1:15). Why is it important for Paul to establish the truth of his points? What does this suggest we must also do?
