  1. Look at the sequence of events in vs. 1-2. Why do the people of Israel turn back to God? Why do you think it happened at that time?
  2. Why do you think the Ark remains at Kiriath Jearim for so long? What does this suggest about Israel?
  3. What requirements does Samuel make for the Israelites to 'make good' on their decision to turn back to God (NIV)? Why does this have to be exclusive?
  4. Consider what the men of Kiriath Jearim do to Eleazer, Abinadab's son. Why would Eleazer need to be consecrated?
  5. Why will God not deliver the Israelites unless Samuel's instructions are followed? Where do we also serve other gods while hoping to secure God's blessing?
  6. Consider the symbolism of the water drawn and poured out before the Lord. What does this mean? In what ways does it reflect the sacrament of baptism?
