Discussion Questions for 1 Samuel, Chapter 7
- Look at the sequence of events in verses 1–2. Why do the people of Israel turn back to God? Why do you think it happened at that time?
- Why do you think the Ark remains at Kiriath Jearim for so long? What does this suggest about Israel?
- What requirements does Samuel make for the Israelites to “make good” on their decision to turn back to God (NIV)? Why does this have to be exclusive?
- Consider what the men of Kiriath Jearim do to Eleazer, Abinadab’s son. Why would Eleazer need to be consecrated?
- Why will God not deliver the Israelites unless Samuel’s instructions are followed? Where do we also serve other gods while hoping to secure God’s blessing?
- Consider the symbolism of the water drawn and poured out before the Lord. What does this mean? In what ways does it reflect the sacrament of baptism?
- How do the Israelites show a different approach from Chapter 4 to the danger of the approaching Philistines? What does this suggest about their repentance?
