Discussion Questions for 1 Samuel, Chapter 27

  1. Do you think God's plan for David included him fleeing into enemy territory to escape Saul? Why or why not? Think of a time in your life when God lead you through a tricky situation for your ultimate good. How did this experience bring you closer to God? How did it glorify him?
  2. What land does David flee to in this chapter? Why is it significant that David should go there? What does this teach us about God's ability to protect those he cares for?
  3. Consider the number of men who followed David into the land of the Philistines. Do you think they knew the danger they were in following him? Why or why not? What do you think this teaches us about the character of David? How does this prove he is worthy to be king?
  4. This is not the first time David has fled to the king of Gath to escape Saul. Read the account in 1 Samuel 21:10-15. How do these two accounts differ? How are they similar? How is God's provision and sovereignty displayed in both?
  5. What does Saul do when he learns David has fled to Gath? What does this tell us about the reputation of Achish in those times? Was David right to be wary of this king? Why or why not?
  6. How did David prove himself in the eyes of Achish? Did he ever betray his people in doing so? Why do you think this is significant?
  7. In what way did David deceive Achish? Does this mean God approved of this deception? Why or why not?
  8. According to verse 7, David lived in the land of the Philistines "a year and four months" (ESV). How do you think David felt as a refugee in a dangerous land? Is there a season in your life that you can compare to this season of waiting in David's life? How did God prove his faithfulness in that season?
  9. How did David ensure that Achish would not learn of his deception? Do you believe this was a wise move on David's part? Why or why not? What does this tell us about the character of God, specifically in regards to his justice?
  10. Consider the trials that David has faced thus far. Is God still good in the midst of them? Why or why not? What comfort might this bring to believers who are suffering today?
