  1. Why do you believe John calls his readers "my little children" (verse 1, CSB)? What does this imply?
  2. What is the purpose of John's letter according to verse 1? Why is this an important part of the Christian life?
  3. In verse 1, the word "advocate" pictures Jesus as an attorney defending us before the Judge. What makes Jesus a perfect advocate for us? Why do we need an advocate?
  4. Verse 2 calls Jesus "the atoning sacrifice for our sins" (CSB). What did He do to cover our sins? What should be our response to Him?
  5. Jesus is the atoning sacrifice not only for our sins, "but also for those of the whole world" (verse 2, CSB). Do you believe this means that all people will believe in Him and be saved? Why do you believe as you do?
  6. According to verse 3, how do we have assurance of our salvation? Why is obedience the mark of a Christian?
