Discussion Questions for 1 Chronicles, Chapter 29

  1. 1 Chronicles 29:1, “And David the king said to all the assembly, “Solomon my son, whom alone God has chosen, is young and inexperienced, and the work is great, for the palace will not be for man but for the LORD God.” (ESV) What significance does this public announcement make? What was David mainly addressing to the people? How did these words lay a foundation for the transition that was about to take place?
  2. 1 Chronicles 29:3, “Moreover, in addition to all that I have provided for the holy house, I have a treasure of my own of gold and silver, and because of my devotion to the house of my God I give it to the house of my God.” The main point here is not that David had gold and silver, but that he stored up his best to devote it to The Lord. What does that mean to you? Have you ever seen anyone in your life give their best to God? What impact did their actions have on your heart?
  3. 1 Chronicles 29:6,9 “Then the leaders of fathers’ houses made their freewill offerings, as did also the leaders of the tribes, the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and the officers over the king’s work…Then the people rejoiced because they had given willingly, for with a whole heart they had offered freely to the LORD. David the king also rejoiced greatly.” What does this verse reveal about free will? Why are the people rejoicing in this?

  5. 1 Chronicles 29:14. “But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you.” (ESV) What point is David trying to make here? How can we apply this heart posture today?
  6. 1 Chronicles 29:16, “O LORD our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a house for your holy name comes from your hand and is all your own.”(ESV) What are some things around you that might make it difficult to give God the glory? How does this verse contrast with what the world teaches?
  7. 1 Chronicles 29:18, “O LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our fathers, keep forever such purposes and thoughts in the hearts of your people, and direct their hearts toward you.” (ESV) How could you use this verse as a guide to write your own prayer to the Lord? How would you keep the heart of it while also personalizing it to where you or your community is today?
  8. 1 Chronicles 29:22, “And they ate and drank before the LORD on that day with great gladness. And they made Solomon the son of David king the second time, and they anointed him as prince for the LORD, and Zadok as priest.” (ESV) What was the significance of Solomon being announced as King a second time? What do you think it was like for David to watch his son step into this position?
  9. What characteristics does this chapter stir inside of you? What is one of the biggest characteristics seen in this chapter that you want to pray into?
  10. 1 Chronicles 29:28, “Then he died at a good age, full of days, riches, and honor. And Solomon his son reigned in his place.” How does this chapter affirm that David passed away full of honor? What is it like to dwell on David’s life from the first time we meet him tending to the sheep as a boy to His passing as a fulfilled King?
